Abstract:As more and more countries liberalise their financial systems, capital has become increasingly mobile. These emerging capital flows and the accumulation of capital are mainly embodied in foreign direct investment. A new component is global property investment which is creating an internationalised office market and distinctive spatial patterns in global cities. Despite the increasing volume of foreign-owned property, as well as the popularity of the facilitating policies for cross-border capital flows into real estate, in both developed and developing countries, there has been little attention to the spatial characteristics of global property investment (GPI). Massive cross-border capital flows, associated with the decision of international property investors, will result in locally intensive changes. Understanding these changes will allow advice to refine and enhance sectoral and urban policy. The primary purpose of this study is, therefore, to explore the characteristics of GPI via the magnitude of the flows, global investors' location choice, links between property markets and office space markets, and government response to these outcomes. Seoul is used as case study because there is a fast growing foreign-owned office property sector along with city's growing integration with the global economy. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Learning Vector Quantisation (LVQ) is a method of applying the Vector Quantisation (VQ) to generate references for Nearest Neighbour (NN) classification. Though successful in many occasions, LVQ suffers from several shortcomings, especially the reference vectors are prone to diverge. In this paper, we propose a Classified Vector Quantisation (CVQ) to establish VQ for classification. By CVQ, each data category is represented by its own codebook, which can be implemented by some learning algorithms. In classification process, each codebook offers a generalised NN. The examples of handwritten digit recognition and offline signature verification are used to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:Intra macroblock refreshment is an effective approach for error-resilient video coding. In this paper, in addition to intra coding, we propose to add two macroblock coding modes to enhance the transmission robustness of the coded bitstream, which are inter coding with redundant macroblock and intra coding with redundant macroblock. The selection of coding modes and the parameters for coding the redundant version of the macroblock are determined by the rate-distortion optimization. It is worth mentioning that the end-to-end distortion is employed in the optimization procedure, which considers the channel conditions. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms other error-resilient approaches significantly; for some video sequences, the average PSNR can be up to 4 dB higher than that of the Optimal Intra Refreshment approach.

Abstract:　　作为早期研究中国传统建筑的欧洲学者之一,德国建筑师恩斯特·鲍希曼(Ernst Boerschmann,1873～1949,又译柏石曼)于1902～1930年三次来到中国,对于中国传统建筑进行考察活动,调查范围遍及十四个省,拍下数千张反映古代皇家建筑、宗教建筑和代表各地风情的民居等内容的中国传统建筑及景观照片,并对包括普陀山宗教建筑在内的大量传统建筑进行了测绘工作。其中,在第二次考察(1906～1909年)过程中,他在宁波及普陀山进行考察,其对象包括天童寺及普陀山宗教建筑等。返回德国之后。他将考察所获得的资料整理,连续出版了6部论述中国传统建筑的专著,成为这一时期欧洲对于中国传统建筑领域研究的权威。本文在全面介绍鲍希曼对于中国传统建筑考察活动的基础上,以其在宁波及普陀山地区开展的调研工作为对象,深入分析其德文著作《中国的建筑和宗教文化之一：普陀山》所载内容,研究其作为一个西方建筑师对于中国传统建筑的研究方法及研究特点,并对其工作中尝试建立的中国传统建筑类型学档案的研究方法在近代对于中国风格建筑产生的影响进行分析,并对这一方法及其成果对今天传统建筑保护工作带来可能的影响展开探讨。

Abstract:Large planar array antennas are the favored technology for future 5G, mm-wave and 60GHz ISM-band high speed gateways. However, where wide angle scan spot beams are required, spherical lenses have the advantages of close to 180 degrees scan without gain loss, wide bandwidth and relative loss cost compared to phased arrays. In this survey, 2 and 3 layer lenses suited to 3D printing are discussed and initial simulation results presented.

Abstract:　　In considering boundary value problems related to soil-structure interaction, both the structure and the soil are involved in the calculation.It is important to consider properly the geometric and material nonlinearities of both the structures and the soils.In this study, a rigorous numerical scheme for space beam element that can properly take the geometric and the material nonlinearities of structures into consideration was introduced and embedded into the DBLEAVES (Ye, 2011).Soil-water coupled dynamic analyses were conducted on a soil-group pile foundation-superstructure system to investigate the seismic behavior of an elevated bridge with a 12-pile foundation during a major earthquake.

Abstract:A causal relationship among key criticalsuccess factors of successful entrepreneurs in Thailand is proposed. Abstract:Introduction Over the last few years, there has been an upsurge in interest among scholars on the importance of knowledge-based resources and their role in firms (e.g., see the special issue on Knowledge and the Firm of SMJ, 1996; Grant, 1996a). For instance, current interest in cross-functional capabilities like fast response (Stalk, 1988), new product development (Clark and Fujimoto, 1992), technical innovation, product innovation, all strategic or organizational innovation (Nonaka, 1994) reflects the strategic importance of knowledge in firms. As noted by Grant (1996b), "Knowledge has emerged as the most strategically-significant resource of the firm." "To put it somewhat more dramatically, there is evidence suggesting that the winners in tomorrow's market place will be the masters of knowledge management" (Bresman et al., 1999).

Abstract:Cerebral palsy (CP) is generally considered as a non-progressive neuro-developmental condition that occurs in early childhood and is associated with a motor impairment, usually affecting mobility and posture. Automatic accurate identification of cerebral palsy gait has many potential applications, for example, assistance in diagnosis, clinical decision-making and communication among the clinical professionals. In previous studies, support vector machine (SVM) and some other pattern classification methods like neural networks have been applied to classify CP gait patterns. The objective of this study is to first further investigate different classification paradigms in the CP gait analysis, particularly the Kernel Fisher Discriminant Analysis (KFD) which has been successfully applied to many pattern recognition problems and identified as a strong competitor of SVM. The component obtained by KFD maximally separates two classes in the feature space, thus overcoming the limitations of linear discriminant analysis of being unable to extract nonlinear features representing higher-order statistics. Using a publicly available CP gait dataset (68 normal healthy and 88 with spastic diplegia form of CP), a comprehensive performances comparison was presented with different features including the two basic temporal-spatial gait parameters (stride length and cadence). Various cross-validation testing show that the KFD offers better classification accuracies than the support vector machine and is superior to a number of other classification methods such as decision tree, multiple layer perceptron and k nearest neighbor.

Abstract:中国文化热在国际上已经流行若干年,至今热度不减.好莱坞动画片《功夫熊猫》,就是个典型的代表.它从2008年起连拍3部,讲述了主角熊猫阿宝从一个身手笨拙的面馆跑堂,通过刻苦努力最终成为拯救世界的英雄.;《功夫熊猫》从故事背景到人物细节都充满了浓厚的中国风,但是在关键细节——师徒关系的把握上,终究还是欠缺了一点神韵.虽然阿宝尊称浣熊为“师父”(Master Shifu),从他们的交往过程来看,浣熊扮演的更像是一位“导师”.其实,中国的“师父”和西方的“导师”乍听之下颇为类似,其含义及在企业实践中的作用却大相径庭.

Abstract:Despite the fact that applying constructability concepts in building designs have led to savings estimated within a range of 1%% to 14%% of the capital cost, the construction industry still lacks an advanced tool to assess and check for constructability implementations in designs. Therefore, the objective of this research is to propose a quantitative assessment of building constructability, which transforms the subjective assessment of constructability knowledge to a quantified value so that it is easy to analyze and improve building design. The proposed methodology uses the advancement of object oriented Building Information Model (BIM) and 4D simulation model to serve as a data repository models for the constructability assessment platform. Factors affecting constructability of building designs have been identified and relatively weighted using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) technique based on a questionnaire survey collected throughout the Canadian provinces. Evaluation criteria are also developed to assist the designer to evaluate the design proposals. The outcome shows that the proposed method provides the designer an accurate and faster mode in evaluating project constructability by using the parametric features from BIM and taking the advantage of spatial relationship between building components.

Abstract:Background: Stigma of mental illness isoften examined in social psychology and psychiatric rehabilitation using attitudestudies. Participants of these studies are among health professionals andgeneral public members. A common measure of stigma is using validated scalewhich measures the opinion on mental illness. Method: A cross-sectional surveywas presented to 208 registered nurses. Principal component analyses (withoblique rotation) were used to identify underlying dimensionality in thecorrelations of items for social distancing. Subscale score variations wereanalysed across nurse type and ethnicity to examine the discriminant validityof the subscale. Results: Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed onedimension accounting for 43.5%% of the variations within items for socialdistancing. Developed as scale, termed Stigma towards Psychiatric Patients(STPP), reliability analysis indicated high internal consistency withrespective alpha coefficient of 0.8. Chinese general nurses scored highest onsocial distancing than the other three groups: Chinese psychiatric nurses,Anglo general and Anglo psychiatric nurses. Conclusion: Psychometric evaluationof the Stigma Scale (STPP) suggests it is a reliable instrument for measuringsocial distancing attitudes towards mental illness. The effect of ethnicity onstigmatising attitudes is not entirely accounted for by exposure to people withmental illness.

Abstract:We studied the CBOE Market Volatility Indexfrom 1995 to 2004 and the Cross-Sectional Volatility of MSCI US and MSCI ACAsia ex Japan of the same period. Tracking Error calculations and MarketVolatility Analyses were performed. We selected a portfolio, Dragon, for RiskAnalysis, Risk Decomposition and Risk Characteristics identification purposes.A conclusion relating Dragon's Tracking Error and its Portfolio Size was drawn.

Abstract:Krugman (1995) argues that the growth of world trade is due to technology-led declines in transportation costs, suggesting that transportation costs are still playing an important role in impeding trade between countries. In this paper a panel data study on the impact of relative trade barriers on bilateral exports within East Asia is examined using a gravity model. In the first step the impact of technology factor along with geographical factors and institutional factors on bilateral transportation costs is investigated. In the second step, GMM and an instrumental variable approach is used to tackle the econometric problem of endogeneity. We confirm that cultural and technology factors as well as institutional factors have significant effects on transportation costs across East Asia nine countries, the improvements in infrastructure and technology will stimulate bilateral trades in East Asia.
