1.Institutional perspective on emerging industry development: Foreign experiences and policy implications for China

Abstract:Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to elucidate the dynamic interactions and co-evolution of institutions with the technology and organization fields in emerging industry development. Insights and inspirations from comparison of the triangle relationship among government, market and local community in different institutional contexts could contribute to possible institutional innovation in the context of large-scale institutional transition. In this way, this paper is expected to offer insights to the development of emerging industries in China. Design/methodology/approach: The paper reviews the focal literature focusing on institutional change and the co-evolution of institution, industry and technology. A multi-level conceptual framework is put forward to explain the mechanism for the co-evolution of technology, organization and institution. A multi-case comparison method was applied to compare and disclose the process of co-evolution of institutions, and the technology and organizational fields, as well as varied paths of industry development in different institutional contexts. Findings: Emerging industry development in China is still presenting the character of path dependence to a great extent under traditional institutional arrangement, while the power and possible contribution from broader actors in the local community have been ignored. Driving force for a more innovative institutional transition towards emerging industry development should consider decentralized institutional arrangement and actions at local community instead of "command and control" from central planning. Practical implications: First, the comparison of wind energy industry development in three countries creates possibilities for further analysis and reference for China's emerging industry. Second, the illustration of the triangle relationship among government, market and local community in different countries helps policy makers in China reconsider and redesign an effective institutional framework for balancing the powers among indigenous community, local government and market. Institutional alignment should be listed as an important consideration during the process of the policy design of such an effective institutional framework. Originality/value: The paper presents a model to understand the dynamic co-evolution of the institution, technology and organizational fields. It confirms the role of institution in promoting emerging industry development. Particularly, it offers inspirations for the development of emerging industries in nations facing large-scale institutional transition. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited.

2.The distribution function and measure preserving maps

Abstract:Existence of measure preserving maps has been discussed in books on real analysis where the Axiom of Choice is instrumental. In this note we introduce a method to construct such maps. For our construction we use the distribution function and elementary differential equations.

3.When is analog? When is digital?

Abstract:Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to present a cybernetic way of seeing analog and digital along with a basic vocabulary for discussing assumptions underlying the use of both terms. Design/methodology/approach - Taking analog and digital not as properties of observed phenomena but as properties of observers, I ask not what is digital or analog, but what I do when I use these terms. I analyze introspectively, and report on, what I think my assumptions are when using the two terms. Findings - I develop a basic vocabulary to describe engagements that I describe as analog or digital. This vocabulary is applicable beyond technical contexts and suitable also for discussing social and creative processes. It includes a kind of observer who I call matchmaker. Research limitations/implications - The presented research is preliminary and subjective. Originality/value - While previous discussions consider analog and digital as properties of observed phenomena, they are considered here as properties of observers. The presented discussion is sufficiently abstract to account for the analog and the digital at various scales, including electronic signal processing and human interaction. The author argues that discussions of engagements described as analog or digital must account for observers of these engagements, including those who act as their matchmakers.

4.Modeling and Verification of NCL Circuits Using PAT

Abstract:NULL Conventional Logic (NCL) is a Delay-Insensitive (DI) clockless paradigm and is suitable for implementing asynchronous circuits. Efficient methods of analysis are required to specify and verify such DI systems. Based on Delay Insensitive sequential Process (DISP) specification, this paper demonstrates the application of formal methods by applying Process Analysis Toolkit (PAT) to model and verify the behavior of NCL circuits. A few useful constructs are successfully modeled and verified by using PAT. The flexibility and simplicity of the coding, simulation and verification shows that PAT is effective and applicable for NCL circuit design and verification. (C) 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd. 5.Some remarks on a paper of Chetwynd and Hilton on critical star multigraphs

Abstract:In [A.G. Chetwynd and A.J.W. Hilton, Critical star multigraphs, Graphs and Combinatorics 2 (1986), 209-221] Chetwynd and Hilton started the investigations of the edge-chromatic properties of a particular class of multigraphs, which they called star multigraphs. A star multigraph is a multigraph such that there exists a vertex v* that is incident with each multiple edge. Star multigraphs turn out to be useful tools in the study of the chromatic index of simple graphs. The main goal of this paper is to provide shorter and simpler proofs of all the main theorems contained in the above mentioned paper. Most simplifications are achieved by means of a formula for the chromatic index recently obtained by the author and by a careful use of arguments involving fans.

6.Numerical Study to Examine the Effect of Porosity on In-Flight Particle Dynamics

Abstract:High velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) thermal spray has been widely used to deposit hard composite materials such as WC-Co powders for wear-resistant applications. Powder morphology varies according to production methods while new powder manufacturing techniques produce porous powders containing air voids which are not interconnected. The porous microstructure within the powder will influence in-flight thermal and aerodynamic behavior of particles which is expected to be different from fully solid powder. This article is devoted to study the heat and momentum transfer in a HVOF sprayed WC-Co particles with different sizes and porosity levels. The results highlight the importance of thermal gradients inside the particles as a result of microporosity and how HVOF operating parameters need to be modified considering such temperature gradient.

Abstract:Estimating arithmetic is a design paradigm for DSP hardware. By allowing structurally incomplete arithmetic circuits to occasionally perform imprecise calculations, higher performance can be achieved in many different electronic systems. This paper presents a potential useful approach to implement tree multipliers by using estimating arithmetic. Experimental results show the applicability and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

10.Subcellular phenotype images classification by MLP ensembles with random linear oracle

Abstract:Subcellular localization is a key functional characteristic of proteins. An automatic, reliable and efficient prediction system for protein subcellular localization can be used for establishing knowledge of the spatial distribution of proteins within living cells and permits to screen systems for drug discovery or for early diagnosis of a disease. In this paper, we investigate an approach based on augmented image features by incorporating curvelet transform and neural network (MLP) ensemble for classification. A simple Random Subspace (RS) ensemble offers satisfactory performance, which contains a set of base MLP classifiers trained with subsets of attributes randomly drawn from the combined features of curvelet coefficients and original Subcellular Location Features (SLF). An MLP ensemble with Random Linear Oracle (RLO) can further improve the performance by replacing a base classifier with a "miniensemble", which consists of a pair of base classifiers and a fixed, randomly created oracle that selects between them. With the benchmarking 2D HeLa images, our experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The RS-MLP ensemble offers the classification rate 95%% while the RS-RLO ensemble gives 95.7%% accuracy, which compares sharply with the previously published benchmarking result 84%%. © 2011 IEEE.

11.Concurrent Error Detection Adder Based On Two Paths Output Computation

Abstract:This paper presents a concurrent error detection (CED) technique for a bit-slice of a full-adder. The proposed method involves computing the sum and carry bits in two alternative ways so that transient faults will be detected by comparing the results (Sum and Carry out) obtained from the two computing paths. This technique attempts to reduce the amount of extra hardware and cost of the circuit. In order to avoid the problem of extra time we will propagate the result when the first computation is finished so that dependent computation can commence execution as soon as possible. To prove the efficiency of the proposed method, the circuit is simulated in standard CMOS 32nm technology and some transient faults are voluntary injected in the Layout of the circuit. The proposed design involves 12.12%% saving in transistor count compared to DMR (Dual Modular Redundancy) style design.

12.Error-resilient video coding with end-to-end rate-distortion optimized at macroblock level

Abstract:Intra macroblock refreshment is an effective approach for error-resilient video coding. In this paper, in addition to intra coding, we propose to add two macroblock coding modes to enhance the transmission robustness of the coded bitstream, which are inter coding with redundant macroblock and intra coding with redundant macroblock. The selection of coding modes and the parameters for coding the redundant version of the macroblock are determined by the rate-distortion optimization. It is worth mentioning that the end-to-end distortion is employed in the optimization procedure, which considers the channel conditions. Extensive simulation results show that the proposed approach outperforms other error-resilient approaches significantly; for some video sequences, the average PSNR can be up to 4 dB higher than that of the Optimal Intra Refreshment approach.

13.Influential factors of College Students' Team learning



Abstract:  This research explores the potential influences of 4 variables on team learning in college students' team activities.The 4 variables are team motivation, team trust, team conflict and team leadership.73 college student teams have been selected as subjects and received questionnaires by each member of all the teams.Results of unitary linear regression show that team motivation, team trust, team leadership are positive predictors of team learning respectively, team conflict have negative relationship with team learning.When putting 4 variables into regression equation simultaneously, team leadership, interpersonal relationship orientated motivation are positive predictors of team learning, regression coefficient of the rest variables are insignificant.The results imply that the unique team role and performance demands of college students' teams may endow team trust and team conflict with interpersonal meaning.

15.Time Strategy: A Missing Dimension in Strategic Management Research

Abstract:As time is a part embedded in strategy, strategy has a time- dependent nature. An analysis is made on the interaction between the strategic action and management cognition based on the time -dependent nature. An elaboration is made on the interaction between the micro action subject in the processes of organizing the formation, implementation and innovation of strategy, and the meso - and macro - layers in the process of organizing strategic action. A discussion is conducted on the mechanisms of impacts on the organizational strategic action imposed by the individual actor in the state of the cognition at different times. The strategic management activities based on the time perspective help deepen the understanding of the topics such as organizing strategic decision- making, innovation, dynamic capacity, entrepreneur innovation, etc. , and also help cognize and deal with some dilemmas in management practices.

17.A Relaxed Dimensional Factorization preconditioner for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a Relaxed Dimensional Factorization (RDF) preconditioner for saddle point problems. Properties of the preconditioned matrix are analyzed and compared with those of the closely related Dimensional Splitting (DS) preconditioner recently introduced by Benzi and Guo [7]. Numerical results for a variety of finite element discretizations of both steady and unsteady incompressible flow problems indicate very good behavior of the RDF preconditioner with respect to both mesh size and viscosity. Abstract:Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are evolving towards interconnected, sensing, processing and actuating infrastructures that are expected to provide services for multiple concurrent applications. In a multi-purpose WSN, concurrently running applications share network resources and each may have varying Quality of Data (QoD) requirements. Our middleware targets these multi-purpose WSN deployments. Specifically this paper discusses how one should express and configure QoD properties for multi-purpose WSNs. We contribute by presenting our approach; which leverages per-instance QoD configuration and a separation of operational concerns to achieve simpler configuration and improve adaptability and customize-ability of the WSN. Abstract:In this paper, we focus on safety-critical applications based on the System-on-Chip (SoC) approach design and using the nano-CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) technology. These systems are present in diverse areas in our life from consumer electronic products to automobile, aerospace, medical, nuclear and military applications. These products could cause injury or loss of human life if they fail or encounter errors. In fact, the malfunctioning of these equipments can be much dangerous which needs special attention to ensure the functionality, quality and dependability of the product. Thus, dependability must be considered from the beginning when designing the system. Therefore, testing should even be considered earlier, intertwined with the design process. The process of designing for better testability is called design for testability (DfT). The first part of the paper presents a DfT technique using a new design analog checker circuit to assure the detection of defects occurring in nano-CMOS analog integrated circuits (ICs). The checker is implemented in full-custom 65nm CMOS technology at 1 V power supply. SPICE simulations of the post-layout extracted CMOS checker, which includes all parasitic, are used to validate the technique and demonstrate the acceptable electrical behaviour of the checke. ©2011 IEEE.

20.Investigation of lightning rod shielding angle

Abstract:This paper studies those parameters affecting the shielding angle of the lightning rod (Franklin Rod) above very tall buildings. It was recommended that the shielding angle of the lightning rod is about 45° ∼ 60°. The downward lightning leader is modeled by using discrete line charges to consider the exponential distribution of charges through the downward leader. The voltage condition used by Rizk is used to investigate the inception of the upward lightning leader. Different air conditions (relative air density and air humidity) are considered for more practical simulation. The influences of lightning parameters and lightning rod height on the shielding angle are studied. The results shows that, lightning leader parameters, lightning rod height and ground slope have series effects on the lightning rod shielding angle. Based on the results, a lightning rod shielding angle for shielding design is recommended to decrease the lightning stroke to the lightning rod. © 2011 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.
